EDITORIAL REVIEWS
National Parenting Center - "If there is a better book for children about butterflies, we haven't seen it."
The School Library Journal Review claims this to be the most unique book of its kind . . . "No other book offers the same wealth of related activities." In the article it was equated with Laurence Pringle's An Extraordinary Life: The Story of a Monarch Butterfly (Orchard 1997) and Kathryn Lasky's Monarch's (Harcourt Brace 1993). To be mentioned in the company of such well known and distinguished authors, is an honor in itself.
AMAZON.COM - Parent's Choice Review - Track the life cycle and metamorphosis of one of Nature's resplendent creatures. First-rate photographs and illustrations, instructions for hands-on activities, like planting a butterfly garden, crafting monarch-inspired artwork, and joining other kids throughout North America to chart the monarch's annual cross-continent migration will inspire MONARCH MAGIC! among families everywhere.

SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND
The editors of Ideals Publications/ Williamson Publishing Company and I designed this book to have purpose and focus. With enough publicity - Save the Monarch's Habitat! - could become a National Environmental Campaign for kids in their schools. At present, logging of the ancient fir forests in Mexico's Transvolcanic Range is destroying the Eastern Monarch's winter sanctuaries, and in the West, monarchs are being squeezed out by dwindling open space and coastal development. It's as if the butterfly's winter coats is being torn away!
This action could devastate and endanger future generations within the next 10 years. Government agencies from Canada, The United States and Mexico are attempting to work together to insure the safety of this unique migratory insect; the only migration in existence, sorely supported by the milkweed plant for its nourishment. Kids across the USA can plant butterfly gardens and transplant milkweed to the SAFETY of their backyards and school playgrounds.
Ironically, I too have personally experienced the devastating loss of a butterfly's beautiful habitat . . . all my photographs were taken in a field near the school where I teach. On a sunny, peaceful, Sunday morning, I went out at 6:00 A.M. to take more pictures and when I arrived at the field . . . the field had been leveled by a bulldozer the day before! It is now the site of a condominium. . . I am so thankful for the pictures I had previously taken!!!!
Currently, Monarch Magic! is a key resource at MONARCH WATCH (www.monarchwatch.org), an organization dedicated to Education, Conservation and Research centered at the University of Kansas Entomology Department. Through this organization, children and teachers can easily access detailed information and share the dynamics of this environmental cause through the internet!
Friends of the Monarchs, a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the natural wintering habitat of the monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove, CA, ( P.O. Box 51683, Pacific Grove, CA 93950), is supporting the advancement of the book through its local and nationwide membership.
A portion of the sales of MONARCH MAGIC! will be donated to the volunteering and dedicated efforts of Friends of the Monarchs in California and to The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation, at the University of Minnesota under the directorship of Dr. Karen Oberhauser, (2078 Skillman Ave, Roseville, MN 55113), supporting the preservation of the monarch's wintering habitat in Mexico. It is with great pride that I help these organizations by sending a donation from my book!
